heim

While working on this long-term project, Markus Born lives out of his car, moving between Germany’s northern coast and the Alps. His camera turns to everyday and historical places – cities, nature, industry, memorial sites, refugee shelters – as well as local rituals and public gatherings.

His unstaged photographs combine a documentary approach with an aesthetic drive, in which precise composition and chance go hand in hand.

“heim” addresses questions that reach beyond Germany: responsibility toward history, migration, the relationship with nature – concerns that shape twenty-first-century Europe. It also touches on current political and social conflicts. The word “heim” does not arrive at “Heimat”: it points to a movement back that does not reach its destination.

About

Markus Born is a photographer whose work moves between experimental exploration and precise composition. With an academic background in philosophy and literature, his practice reflects an engagement with perception, form, and time—asking how photography can reveal what escapes direct observation.

He works with light as both a structural and temporal element, using it to examine the interplay between presence and absence, movement and stillness. Driven by sustained curiosity and reflection, Born’s work unfolds as an exploration of how the visible connects to experience and perception.
